RAW and JPEG
Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Today I decided to check out how much difference can I achieve between raw and jpeg images. 350D has the option of saving each image in both raw and jpeg formats. Of course it consumes considerable memory but it is handy for someone who is learning. I am posting the samples here. Note that the conversion was done with Canon supplied converter. It is likely that I could get better results if I had some other conversion software. Here are the steps that I followed with the raw image.1. Exposure correction of 2/3 stops.
2. Change white balance from Auto to Daylight.
3. Reduced the contrast by one level. I am still not sure if that was a good idea.
After these 3 steps, I converted the image to jpeg. Post conversion, I applied histogram correction and slightly increased the saturation. Here are the results for comparison. The bird in picture is an Ashy Prinia.

but you could have appied the corrections to the JPEG too and that could have made it look brighter :) I wonder why you didn't!
I also use a 350d and usually like to shoot in medium fine format... I haven't found the time to work with raw yet! As you said, needs to much time in front of the monitor and lots of hits and misses
