WHAT IS NIKON UPTO?
Friday, August 05, 2005
I have often wondered what prompts Nikon to choose features in their SLR cameras. In many cases, something vital or something that a canon user would take for granted will be missing altogether in Nikon's cameras.Take D50 for instance, it does not even have depth of field preview that is a vital feature. Anyone who buys an SLR would really need this. Some of the basic film SLRs also have the same problem. If that sounds surprising for a Canon user, it comes as shocking to know that you may find Cable Release port missing too(D50 again). And Nikon still lives in the world of 5-point autofocus. Their digital cameras do not have an ISO 100 setting. Although I haven’t tested myself, I am told that the noise is considerable when you go higher to 400. All this apart, their cameras are still priced pretty higher than the equivalent Canons. I find it almost shocking that a 6mp camera(D50) that hardly has any features to boast costs the same as Canon’s 8mp camera loaded with many features. What does Nikon think about its buyers? How long do they intend to trick themselves to believe that they are still in an era when they had no competition to worry about? I think it is time they change their attitude. Personally, I am really glad that I have been using Canon equipment. And I am not surprised that a good number of people I know are moving to Canon. And if you keep checking photography forums, you see a good number of people who contemplate moving to Canon.

Initially even I thought D50 is a piece of shit, however Phil Askey has all accolades for this camera. He rates it as 'highly recommended'.
D50 seems to have cut down on noise at high levels, but Yes canon models have rich features to choose from. I would still prefer canon.
