Here is another story of pursuing a photograph in many seasons.
This is a hilly region 6 hours away from my city. When I went there the first time, we camped in the hills, and early morning views had me amazed. However, I could not make a picture that made any justice to the scenery. I don't very well remember, but I think the picture below was shot in August-September months of 2004. It is a season when it usually rains a lot and it can be cloudy.
The next time I went was a year later in October-November months. These are generally the months of clear weather, but we were encountered by surprise rains again, which means that I could still not frame the image I had in mind. Another attempt a year later was also drowned in the rains.
It is the fourth visit to the place that really did give some results. We camped again, this time in the month of June 2007. When we woke up in the mornings, I finally had the kind of weather and lighting that I was looking for all these years, and made the best use of it all. Here is the result.
The conclusion, which is no secret, is simply that persistence pays and lighting and weather condition can make a sea difference to the outcome of a shoot. It is not only here - there are a few more places from where I have come empty handed the first time, but have had more satisfying results in further visits.
It is well known that quality of light, time of the day and even time of the year when you shoot a picture makes a lot of difference to the image that gets formed. Here is a demonstration of how much difference can quality of light make. The photographs below are taken from the same place in three difference years. The first one and third one are made in late December, three years apart and the second one was shot in November the year after the first shot was made. I was first time lucky with this one, and further attempts were never as successful. And then there are other places where I have been unlucky first time, but things have turned out better later.
December 2004
November 2005
After the above two attempts, I made an assumption that December is always more dramatic than November. It is probably true in most cases but did not work that way here. I made my next trip in December 2007, and failed to find it getting as good as in December 2004.
